Join like-minded volunteers at the Teaching Project and give your vital support to improve the level of education as well as help the teachers improve their English and way of teaching.
With more than half of its population living below the poverty line, Malawi is considered one of the world's poorest countries. The infant mortality rate in Malawi is extremely high, due to the poor health care and malnutrition.

In most cases, children in Malawi start primary school at the age of 6. At the moment a pre-school system is inexistent. This means that for children under the age of 6 there is little access to any form of education. There are several private nursery schools throughout the country, mostly located in large towns or cities. However, parents have to pay for their children to attend and most of them cannot afford this.

A number of rural communities have set up groups to provide children basic care and an education. These groups are run by local volunteers. However, in most cases they are underqualified, understaffed and the resources at these groups are very low.

Previous research has proven a strong link between a good pre-school education and the performance at primary school. Furthermore, learning basic English at a young age is very important when preparing children for the lessons that are taught in English at primary schools in Malawi. Nevertheless, most teachers that run the groups don't speak very good English themselves. That is why we are in great need of your help!

Volunteer Tasks

As a volunteer in our teaching project, you will be supporting the teachers by assisting them in one of the local primary schools. On occasion volunteers with teaching experience can be placed in one of the community secondary schools.
If you choose sports in the afternoon you will run various sports sessions and activities.

Volunteers contribute massively to improving the children’s’ education. You may also have the opportunity to teach adult education classes, which provide necessary skills development to rural communities. Furthermore, as part of our initiative to integrate IT to local schools and communities, you can help teachers develop and improve their computer skills.

On your first day at the project you will get a project briefing and a village tour, you start work on Wednesday.
In the mornings volunteers will assist teachers with the curriculum subjects, including English, math and sciences. Most days you start around 07.30 and will finish teaching in the morning between 11:00 and 12:00 and have a lunch break back at the volunteer house during the hottest part of the day.

In the afternoons volunteers have the opportunity to plan and run extracurricular classes that may vary between schools or to organise and run sports activities and coaching sessions, including sports like football, netball, volleyball and rounders.:

Teaching Options
Library Workshops:
The library workshops we organise give the children the opportunity to do activities they would not usually have the chance to, such as art and crafts and reading. Volunteers will assist with these activities as well providing extra English and maths tuition.

Wildlife & Environment Club:
This entails educating the children about the environment, conservation and the importance of preserving the wildlife in Malawi.

IT Lessons:
These lessons will initially be taught to the teachers and introduces to the students as soon as the teachers have achieved basic knowledge (specific computer skills are not necessary for these lessons)

Drama, Music, Arts & Crafts:
These activities are open to be filled in however you would like, depending on your personal interests.

Sports Options
In the afternoons you will organise and run sports activities and coaching sessions, including sports like football, netball, volleyball and rounders.

Volunteers that are with us for a longer period of time will have the opportunity to organise sports matches or mini-tournaments for the children, or even with a neighbouring school or village teams.

Football & Netball:
In Malawi, football is the most popular sport for boys and netball is the most popular sport for girls. Existing teams in these sports usually meet every afternoon to train or play matches. As a volunteer your role will be to work alongside the local team coach or teacher (if there is one) and assist them with:

Warm ups and drills
Ball skills and game play
General fitness - speed, stamina, balance and coordination
Cool down and stretches
Basic nutritional and hygiene advice

The involvement of volunteers encourages more children to participate in sport and the training sessions. This is very important regarding their health and fitness, personal development, such as learning team skills, and involving them in a positive activity in their free time.

Additional sports that you may coach or get involved in include volleyball, cricket, or swimming. We try to encourage new sports, so if you have a particular sport in mind that you would like to coach feel free to let us know. However, we ask volunteers to be patient, as these sports are not played as commonly in Malawi.

Sports sessions are a lot of fun and can be very rewarding. Please keep in mind we only have basic sports equipment and due to the climate, conditions and everyday use the teams are always in need of new items, especially balls. If you would like to and are able to bring a football or sports equipment, it will be very much appreciated by us and the children!

You can be involved in the activities that interest you most. However, a certain amount of flexibility is required in order to maintain the continuity of the afterschool clubs and activities. Friday afternoons are free. Please specify if you are choosing the Teaching or Teaching and Sports Option when you book.

Free Time & Optional Activities

In your free time, you can relax at the volunteer house, swim in the sparkling waters of Lake Malawi and explore the local area. Weekend trips can also be organised by the project staff.

- Liwonde National Park offers a variety of wildlife and large herds of elephant, where you can enjoy the combination of a vehicle safari, walking safari and boat safari in search of the numerous hippo in the rivers.
- Cape Maclear, a popular tourist village at the edge of the lake. Enjoy snorkelling, boat rides on Lake Malawi, exploring the craft stalls and sunbathing on the beach during the day. In the evening there are a couple of lively bars to let your hair down.
- Zomba Plateau, is a cool forest where you can relax, take in the great views, trek and even go horseback riding if you wish.

Although organised weekend excursions are not included in the program price, we do recommend doing a couple of these groups trips during your stay. This way you will be able to see a little more and make the most of your time in Malawi.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Overnatning

Volunteers will stay in a comfortable, shared house in a rural village in the Mangochi District. The volunteer house is located on the shores of the stunning Lake Malawi. The area in which volunteers are based (and Malawi in general) is very safe. However, the house is fenced and gated for additional security and privacy.

The bedrooms in the volunteer house are large shared rooms (2-4 volunteers per room), generally with single or bunk beds. Mosquito nets are provided and the rooms either have en-suite facilities, or an adjacent bathroom. The bathrooms all consist of western style flush toilets and showers. Electricity is provided but expect power cuts, there is internet but is costs around USD 3 per hour, so take cards, books and games with you for evenings/free time.

Lokal transport

Arrival Information
On arrival** at Lilongwe International Airport you will be met by a project representative and transferred by road to the volunteer cottage, which is about 3 ½ - 4 hours drive from the airport. The project staff may need to pick up supplies and complete errands in the city en route, as we only travel to Lilongwe once every 2 weeks, so please be patient and understanding.

Please note that if you arrive on a different day to that specified in your confirmation letter or after 14:00, you will have to pay an additional private transfer fee of $200 in cash to the project co-ordinator on arrival.

If you cannot find our representative, please wait for the arrivals area to clear. If there is a delay of more than 15 minutes, please call the project co-ordinator. If for some reason you miss the flight, or are delayed, you should contact the project co-ordinator:

Augustine Kambalikena: +265 (0)99 191 4633, Sam Galanje: +265 (0)99 382 5560

** Arrival day Monday before 14:00 for airport transfer
** Departure day Monday morning for return airport transfer, departing flights should not be booked before 11:00

Getting to the Project
How you get to your project each day will depend on your activity and which village you are placed at. Sometimes you will travel in the project minibus, but you will be expected to walk or cycle to many programme activities. This is a nice way to see life in the community (the minibus is a bubble) and is how the locals travel. Any transport required during free time must be arranged and paid for by you. Weekend excursions, including the cost of transport, are available and can be arranged with your project co-ordinators.

Måltider

Three meals a day are provided.

Breakfast usually consists of french toast, eggs, porridge or pancakes, and tea and coffee.

Lunch usually consists of sandwiches, pasta, soups, wraps, or similar; or a packed lunch can be provided if you are not returning to the house in the middle of the day.

Dinner will be a hot meal prepared for you by our cook.

Important Reminder:
Participants must advise us of their dietary needs (e.g. if they are vegetarian or have any allergies) prior to their departure. Participants with very specific dietary needs may be required to supplement their meals at their own expense.

Planning to travel to Malawi to volunteer? Here’s some important information for you:

Visas can be applied for in advance, but despite information on some embassy sites, most visitors to Malawi are obtaining visas on arrival still. They are being issued 30 day tourist/visitor visas on arrival for US$ 75. Please ensure that you have US$ 75 cash with you to pay for this on arrival.

The below items may help to ensure that this process is as quick as possible upon your arrival:
- Completed application form. Please enter holiday under reason for travel, as a volunteer visa does not exist currently and a visitor/tourist visa is the appropriate visa for your stay, as a paying tourist to the country, staying less than 90 days.
- Two passport photos
- Air ticket/Itinerary
- Three months latest bank statements

Those staying longer than 30 days are still being issued 30 day visa renewals locally at MWK 5000 each time up to 90 days, as they were previously.

Please note that when filling out the visa form on arrival in Malawi, you should state your address, which is:
Mlambe Cottage
Nkope Hills
Mangochi

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after your departure from Malawi and have two clear facing pages for the Malawian authorities to issue your visa - please check the expiry date of your passport very carefully. Make sure you write on the form the exact number of days that you require in Malawi and check that you have been granted the correct number of days in your passport.

It is important to ensure that you have the necessary Visas for your travel; this is your responsibility. The information provided below is to serve as a guideline only. We advise that you confirm this information with the embassy / consulate of the country that you will be visiting in your home country before departure.

What do I need when arriving in Malawi?
- A copy of your passport and your visa
- Your passport
- Yellow Fever certificate
- Copy of travel insurance
- Immigration details for Arrival Form (This form needs to be filled out on the airplane)

Vaccinations:
You should visit your doctor once your volunteer placement has been confirmed by us and ideally at least 6 weeks prior to travel, regarding the vaccinations and malarial prophylaxis required for your destination. The project is located in a malarial area. Below are some of the common recommendations for travel to Malawi:
- Tetanus: A recent Tetanus injection is highly recommended
- Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B: Usually recommended
- Tuberculosis, Diphtheria, Polio, Rabies: Sometimes recommended
- Yellow Fever: Vaccination certificate required if arriving from risk areas.

Bilharzia can be contracted in many lake shore areas and rivers. We recommend that you are tested on return to your home country and take the Biltricide medication if necessary. This can be cheaply and easily purchased from a pharmacy in Malawi prior to departure or obtained on your return to your home country.
