About Your Location

Spanish by the River-Turrialba, founded in June of 2002, looks out over the surrounding mountain valleys home to world-class rivers, primary and secondary rainforests, a towering volcano, and the quaint town of Turrialba. Known for its authentic Costa Rican feel, you can easily find everything you need here: hotels, restaurants, pool & karaoke bars, gourmet coffee shops, ice cream parlors, discos, swimming pools, banks, internet cafés, gyms (aerobic, fitness, yoga, capoeira, karate, etc.), bookstores, post office, boutiques, and the weekly farmer’s market.

The school itself consists of a hostel for 12 and 4 open air classrooms with views of the jungle below and the volcano above as a background to your Spanish classes. A balcony lined with hammocks, a garden rancho for studying, a large office and a yard filled with fruit trees all contribute to a stress-free learning environment.

Accommodation

In Turrialba you can choose between a hostel or a local homestay.

Hostel (School Residence)
If you like to be independent, yet share with fellow students, we recommend staying at our hostel whilst you study Spanish in Turrialba. The dorm rooms are shared by up to 4 students. If you prefer to have your own space, we also have private rooms with a shared bathroom. There is a charming balcony with lots of hammocks where you can enjoy the gorgeous view of the Turrialba volcano and the jungle in front of it where you can spot sloths, toucans and lots of other birds. A fancy lounge area, a fully equipped kitchen and free WiFi are part of the deal. You can also order a continental breakfast and laundry service, both paid locally.

Local Homestay
The rooms in the homestays are private and have shared bathrooms. The package with our home stays in Costa Rica always include pick up at the local bus station, an orientation in town, laundry service and breakfast. Lunch and dinner can be added if you wish at an additional costs. Food is typical Costa Rican so you will eat rice and beans, chicken, plantains and lots of fruit. We can only expect the local family to adapt their cooking a little bit to your specific dietary needs so if you eat for example gluten free, you will need to bring some products to supply the food that will be offered.

If you don’t use our pick-up service from the airport of San José to your family stay in Costa Rica, you need to call the school to let us know at what time you will arrive in Turrialba so your host family can welcome you at the bus station.

Local transport

You have two options regarding transport to Turrialba. You can make your own way there, or you can pay extra and have a taxi transfer from San Jose International Airport directly to your accommodation in Turrialba. The transfer is NOT included in the price and will be booked separately.

Meals

If you are staying at the hostel (School Residence), meals are not included.

If you are staying at the homestay, breakfast is included. The food is typically Costa Rican, nevertheless, your host family can adapt a little on request (e.g. considering special dietary restrictions).
