Embark on a 6-day adventure to La Huasteca Potosina immersed in the Sierra Madre Oriental, which offers rich biodiversity from mountains to valleys, and desert to jungle. Travel from Mexico City to Ciudad Valles and begin exploring this amazing natural region with turquoise colored rivers cascading down lush green canyons. Be amazed by the waterfalls and natural caves in Puente de Dios, before relaxing in the beautiful waterfalls and natural swimming pools of Tamasopo. Sleep to the sounds of nature at a riverside Eco-Village. Explore the surreal castle and garden of Sir Edward James in Xilitla. Hike to Sotano de las Huahuas, a deep limestone sinkhole where millions of parrots and sparrows nest. Relax in the most amazing sites in la Huasteca Potosina; such as the Micos, Minas Viejas, El Salto, and El Meco Waterfalls.
Day by Day Itinerary:
Day 1 / Wednesday: Night bus from Mexico City to Ciudad Valles
Take a luxury first class nightbus from Mexico City to Ciudad Valles in San Luis Potosi. (Duration 9 hrs)
Day 2 / Thursday: Puente de Dios & Tamasopo Waterfalls (L/D)
Early morning, you will arrive at the Ciudad Valles Bus Station. Please make your own way to the meeting point just a few blocks away from the station (the exact address will be communicated to you before departure). Have breakfast on your own before starting your adventure around 9:00 am. Be amazed by Puente de Dios waterfalls and natural caves, then relax in the turquoise waterfalls and natural swimming pools of Tamasopo. In the afternoon you will be taken to the eco-village for check-in and a delicious buffet dinner.
Day 3 / Friday: Xilitla & Sotano de las Huahuas (B/L/D)
Your guides will pick you up at the eco-village and head to the beautiful town of Xilitla to visit the surrealist garden & castle built by the Englishman Sir. Edward James in the early 1920's and take a refreshing dip at the pools in the middle of the jungle. After another delicious lunch at a local restaurant you will head towards el Sotano de las Huahuas, the nesting place of thousands of sparrows. There you will do a short hike through a beautiful green landscape and we will arrive before the sunset to the amazing gorge (478 meter deep!) to see how the sparrows flock down in thousands after the sun sets. This is an unforgettable experience! Return to your eco-village for a delicious buffet dinner and a good night's rest.
Day 4 / Saturday: Tamtoc Archaeological Site & Micos Waterfalls (B/L/D)
You'll have a buffet breakfast at the eco-village and then go to Tamtoc Archaeological Site for a guided visit. Then you will head to the Micos Waterfalls where you will have some free time to swim around and admire the beautiful view of the area. You will return to the eco-village for dinner.
Please note that a Micos River Waterfall Jumping adventure can be booked separately on this same day, depending on availability.
Day 5 / Sunday: Minas Viejas, El Salto & El Meco Waterfalls - Night bus back to Mexico City (B/L)
Visit the beautiful remote waterfalls of Minas Viejas, El Salto & El Meco on a trip into the heart of the Huasteca Potosina where you will have time to enjoy these beautiful limestone waterfalls with natural turquoise swimming pools to refresh yourself from the intense jungle heat. Have a pack-lunch along the way while you immerse yourself in pristine nature! Your guides will then drive back to Cd. Valles in the evening where you will take a nightbus back to Mexico City.
Day 6 / Monday: Arrival in Mexico City
Arrive to Mexico City at approximately 6:00 am and make your own way to the hostel of your choice.
NOTE: This day to day itinerary is subject to change without prior notice according to climatic and river conditions, as well as group sizes. Depending on availability and preference, you can also replace the listed activities by other activities, please contact us if you are interested (FYI: for some activities like rafting you may have to pay an extra cost).
Suggested Packing List: Camera with extra memory card and spare batteries, waterproof camera (FYI: photos will be taken during water activities, you can buy them afterwards), flashlight or headlamp, aluminum or thick plastic water bottle, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, sunhat, sunglasses, insect repellent, rain poncho, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, t-shirts, shorts, hiking shoes and water shoes (water sandals with thick straps work well), prescription medicine, anti-itch cream, extra snacks or candy and anything else you might need for a few days in nature.
