Bali - Healthcare Education Project

Project Placements

Our project spans various placements:
• Healthcare teaching in schools
• Healthcare campaigns and clinics for local communities and schools

Healthcare teaching in schools - No qualifications needed

We are seeking participants who can educate people in basic first-aid and personal hygiene, focusing on practices such as handwashing, teeth brushing, and general cleanliness. This proactive approach works towards preventing avoidable health problems and easily communicable diseases.
As a participant, you can support healthcare education in local schools around Ubud, actively teaching the importance of basic hygiene, including correct teeth brushing, handwashing, and overall body cleanliness. Many of the daily routines we take for granted are not common practices with the children we will meet, but starting simple education early can have a lasting impact on immediate and future healthcare. You will also be involved in basic educaiton about health and well being.

Project Focus
Educating school children on basic first-aid and health and personal hygiene (handwashing, brushing teeth, general cleanliness)
Organizing healthcare campaigns for local schools

Itinerary
Below is an example of your itinerary for Healthcare teaching in schools - No qualifications needed.

Monday
On the first day of your project which falls on a Monday, you will attend a meeting with the Medical Officer after your breakfast to understand about the nature of the health issues and to get a short training where you will learn what is required to be done. After the meeting, you can prepare for the activities until lunchtime. After lunch, you will visit a local school where you will be able to organize the activities you have planned in an interesting way so that the children will learn from you easily. Once you return from school, you can share your feedback and experiences with us and call it a day.

On this project, you will be spending about one to two hours each morning preparing lessons and about two to three hours in the afternoon teaching at a local elementary or high school. It is entirely up to you to decide what you are going to teach. However, we will provide you with examples of what previous participants have done and that will be helpful for you to start with.

Tuesday to Friday
From Tuesday to Friday, after breakfast, you will start your day using one to two hours preparing daily activities and lessons. After enjoying a delicious lunch, you will leave the center and head to the allocated schools or projects. Once at the project location, you will engage with local children, teaching them about first aid, hygiene, and personal care. Our program follows a 5 week curriculum that we implement in each school placement, and our project coordinators will discuss the lessons and topics to be covered during your planning session.
However, you are welcome to create your own lessons, activities, and games based on the topics. If you have specific requests for the lessons you would like to conduct, please communicate them with our project coordinator.
It is encouraged to present the activities attractively to keep the children engaged throughout the sessions.

Healthcare Campaigns and clinics for local communities and schools - Medical qualifications needed

The need for participants with a range of medical expertise arises due to the significant disparities in hygiene and health practices. In addition to requiring qualified professionals for health camps and dental checkups, medical professionals who can offer guidance on the project’s development would be immensely valuable. If you have a medical background, you can contribute to organizing check-up clinics for local children and adults.
We make a customized program for those who come with professional qualifications and want to do something extra. We also get participants who are professionals but they choose to do the teaching program in the school and create their own activities and lessons.

General Information

The action plan for all participants will be confirmed every Friday. Volunteers work around 4 hours a day.
If you are a medical professional and you plan to conduct any activities or campaigns, please inform us before arrival. Our local team may need time to organize activities. If you do not inform us about joining healthcare campaigns, your program will be healthcare education/teaching in school placements.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include a Culture Week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. Indonesia is one of the most interesting countries in the world for cultural learning and experiences, which means that this week is packed full of exciting adventures, cultural excursions and interactions.

During the Culture Week you will be participating in various activities to get you acquainted with the Balinese culture. You will study the Balinese language, and explore Ubud including the famous Monkey Street as well as the beautiful surrounding areas. Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, wood carving, handicrafts and performing arts, so we'll have you challenge your artistic and creative side with traditional Batik painting. Another fun thing to try out is a Balinese cooking class. Finally, you will make a traditional flower offering and offer your creation at one of the most impressive Balinese temples: The Holy Tirta Empul Temple. We take a short spiritual tour around this famous temple, bathe in holy waters and pray for good luck. Evenings during the Culture Week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

School & Public Holidays

During the following public and school examination periods the Healthcare Education Project is closed, but alternative activities such as cleaning and renovation work will be available.

* One of the most important ceremonies for Balinese people, Galungan and Kuningan Hindu ceremony will take place between 26 February - 09 March 2024, and 24 September - 04 October 2024. During this time we have arranged cleaning and renovation activities at a local school for approximately 4-5 hours a day including repairing broken tables, chairs, doors, windows and other classroom items. The aim is to help create a better atmosphere for the students to learn.

** Day of Silence (Nyepi) is a Hindu ceremony reserved for self-reflection. This takes place from 06:00 on 10 March until 06:00 on 12 March 2024. On Nyepi Day, the project as well as the airport, shops and businesses are closed, and everyone must stay at home. The day before Nyepi you will take part in the preparations and the day after there is a ceremony in the morning. If participants will arrive to Bali on 10th March 2024, we recommend them to arrive before 15:00 or after 23:00 because everywhere on the island, there will be Ogoh Ogoh parades and ceremonies from 15:00-23:00. There will be heavy traffic and close road.

Ceremonies
Besides public holidays, there are several Balinese religious culture events, known as 'ceremonies'. Please respect both the Balinese people and your coordinators during these village events that can take place at any time and are always beyond the volunteer organisation's control. There have been instances where volunteers have traveled to their program in the morning only to find out that the project is closed for the day due to a ceremony being held in that village. This is because everyone in the village is expected to attend. We would greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation during these Balinese cultural events, and ask you to follow your coordinator's instructions in the event of one occurring on your program.

a) Please note that the volunteer organisation is not notified every time a ceremony is about to be held. Unfortunately there is no calendar for ceremonies we can refer to beforehand, also each village is slightly different.
b) The volunteer organisation always confirms that there are normal activities prior to sending you to your project, but there have been cases where volunteers were still turned away at the last minute.
c) Your coordinators will redirect you to another program if there is a ceremony at your program venue.
d) Please avoid arguing or raising your voice. Confrontation will not change the situation as the project staff are not in control of these events. Your coordinator will do their best to place you in another program that is available.

However, please still check please with your airlines and the country's health guidelines on this matter.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

3 meals during weekday are provided (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and 2 meals during the weekend (breakfast, dinner).

Indonesian food is tasty and diverse and you can expect to experience a myriad of flavors and meals during their stay. Typical dishes included mie goreng (fried noodles and vegetables), nasi goreng (fried rice and vegetables) or gado gado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce). For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soybeans), we also provide for some of western dishes. Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, toast etc. Tea, coffee and purified water is available at the house. We do not recommend that you drink the tap water.

Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Please note all meals are served at our centre in buffet style.
