Have an eye-opening observational experience at a hospital in Ho Chi Minh. This program is ideal for persons currently working or studying in the medical field.
Get your scrubs on for theis rare opportunity to shadow local medical professionals and gain insight into the Vietnamese healthcare system. You will experience a new culture and new working environment, as you are guided through different tasks and activities.

This program is based in a government-operated hospital, serving the community of Ho Chi Minh. Observation, recording and analysing will be a key part of this project, as it is a hands-off experience.

It’s important to note that these institutions are bound by government regulations and cannot allow international participants to perform tasks independently. For this reason, this project is best suited to pre-medical or medical students hoping to gain more insight into the Vietnamese healthcare system.

You will have the opportunity to shadow nurses, doctors, and therapists. Depending on your choice and availability, your daily tasks may consist of medication preparation, blood pressure measurement, basic triage and wound care. The hospital has an x-ray room, a children’s ward, an adult ward, a physiotherapy department, as well as an operating theatre, all of which participants may be actively involved in. You may also have an opportunity to observe staff in the acupuncture and occupational/physical therapy departments.

It is important to keep in mind that the English level of the placement staff does differ, however you will always be supported by an English-speaking coordinator from the local team.Participants are allowed to be involved with medical issues and ask the staff questions.

After completing your observational experience, you will be awarded a certificate to reflect your learning accomplishments!

Ho Chi Minh - Medical Placement

Aims & Objectives

The government operated hospital aims to offer effective treatment to a large number of citizens from Ho Chi Minh. At this project you will be able to transfer your pre-existing knowledge to the medical staff and the hospital as well as to absorb new knowledge and information in return.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Introduction Day
Your project starts with an introduction day on the first Monday including a tour of the area surrounding the accommodation, available facilities, cultural "do's and don'ts", safety concerns as well as some basic local language lessons.

Monday to Friday
Your actual project work will begin with a full introduction to all the staff and the hospital. At this point you will also discuss your upcoming role at the project. We will introduce the equipment and the current operating procedures at the hospital. You will also have a full-time doctor designated to you, whom you will "shadow" throughout your entire placement. This doctor will be fully qualified and fluent in English.

Depending on the needs of the hospital at the time, you will assess patients, perform medical procedures, perform surgery and X-rays. The hospital staff also have regular meetings, which you will attend to discuss and improve the needs and performance of the hospital. Your input is vital as different perspectives help with the long-term success of the hospital.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

Please note that there will be a long break in between at lunch time.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, but on Wednesday afternoons you can join the other volunteers and local coordinators for a game of football. Weekends are free, although if preferred, you can continue your work at the hospital.

Public Holidays

The project is either closed or has alternative activities on public holidays.

* Lunar New Year
During the Lunar New Year (Tet), volunteers will prepare food (lunch) for the at-risk community (mostly the young children). We also arrange some activities with the children (singing, dancing, playing, etc…) and teach them English. The local team will buy all the food, ingredients and materials for volunteers to help with preparation of the food, cooking the food and serving for that center. The center is about 45 minutes by bus from the accommodation, and you can expect to volunteer from 08:00-13:00. Alternatively, volunteers can use the time to travel and join in on the local festivities.

Please note that there are fewer patients during the holidays, which means fewer activities at the project.

Mandatory Volunteer Requirements

Minimum age of 18
Basic level of competency in English
Police Clearance Certificate on sign-up
Passport copy required on arrival
Participants wanting to take part in this program should have a medical background such as studying medicine, nursing, pharmacy etc. You will need to provide your CV and a copy of your passport to be submitted to the hospital. You can submit your papers to your travel advisor who can forward them onwards.

However, please still check please with your airlines and the country's health guidelines on this matter.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering work and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. At times, alterations in activities are due to changes in local conditions. This can be part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that it is.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Your accommodation is on a campus in a college dorm where we have our own rooms reserved for volunteers only. The dorm is on the 4th floor, but there is a lift. The rooms are shared between 4-6 participants with private hot water shower and air-conditioning. WiFi is available, but please note that the quality of the Internet access depends on weather conditions. In Southeast Asia internet accessibility is often rather unstable due to heavy rain.

There is also a room reserved as an office, where you can go to if you want some peace and quiet. We have books and magazines available for you to borrow. There is a nice local cafe next to our dorm.

All volunteers are expected to be environmentally conscious and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to participate in keeping the accommodation neat and organized. In an effort to go green, we have installed a hot water solar system, as such, there may be a shortage of hot water during cloudy days or at night time.

Please note:
This accommodation has a 24:00 curfew.

There is a pool available for volunteers to use free of charge at the 4-star hotel next to the accommodation.

Local transport

You will be met upon arrival at Ho Chi Minh City International Airport (SGN) by our team between 06:00 and 22:00. They will be waiting outside the airport’s main arrival hall and holding a sign with either your name or "The Green Lion". If you don’t see him/her, please do not leave the airport, but wait at pole number 5 (after picking up your luggage and coming through customs). Please note that in some cases you may need to wait for several participants to arrive before the group leaves the airport.

If you are arriving outside of the timeframe of 06:00-22:00, there is an extra charge for the airport pick-up.

Alternatively you can make your own way to the accommodation at your own cost (with at least a 24-hour notice of your arrival plan) so that arrangements can be made to have the gate opened by the security team for your arrival.

Late Arrivals
We discourage late arrivals as it may take longer for you to settle into your program. Any emergency or early/late arrivals need to be communicated to us via email [email protected].

Transfer Coordinator: +84 (0) 77 8310 910 (Ms. Nhi)
If you are lost or have any major concerns regarding transfer, please contact the coordinator who speaks English.

Tourist Police: Dial 113. The Touristic Police of Vietnam are trained to assist you in English. Direct any safety concerns to them.

Getting to the Project
The volunteer covers the local costs for transportation between the accommodation and the project.

Getting Around in Ho Chi Minh
There are many taxis around the campus. You can easily catch a taxi from the main road to get to any destination in Ho Chi Minh.

Departure Information
Check-out is on the Saturday before 12:00 in the last week of your program. We can assist you in arranging a local bus or taxi back to the airport. A bus will cost around USD $1 and a taxi USD $5-7.

Three meals a day are served during the week. On weekends there are two meals a day (brunch and dinner). Meals are typically Vietnamese but also include some Western dishes such as sandwiches, spaghetti and bread. We do, however, recommend you try Vietnamese food in all its variety including vegetables, egg, tofu, seafood and meat dishes with rice and/or noodles.

Mere information

What to Bring
Blue scrubs, closed shoes (no flip flops allowed)

Local SIM Card
We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your whole time in Vietnam for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with other participants, staff and family back home, and especially if travelling to us by yourself, this becomes especially useful. These are extremely cheap in Vietnam, costing around USD $3-5.
