Volunteers are placed in a school or educare centre in a disadvantaged communities. No experience is necessary and volunteers can have the joy of watching a child learn and helping them through the process. You will be assigned to a class and will help the teacher in their daily tasks, be it teaching, marking and sports training. After school hours, volunteers will be involved in aftercare or afterschool programs in the settlements.

Schools have 30 to 50 children per class and educare centres have between 5 and 50 children. Resources are stretched and teachers cannot provide attention to every student. Volunteers provide much needed classroom assistance. Volunteers assist in daily running of classes and give one-on-one attention to children in need. Volunteers are supervised by a teacher or coordinator, but will also have the opportunity to give lessons.

We currently support or run the following schools and educare centers:

Zusakhe: The school was founded and run by Patricia (Mama). This beautiful school is made of prefabricated classrooms, a kitchen to provide hot meals for the children each day. The school also boasts a wonderful enclosed area in the middle of the classrooms, completely protected from the harsh African sun and cold winters.

Honeybees: Honeybees Educare is made up of two main buildings, one of which is the home to Principles Sharon and Jerome. The main building is divided into two classrooms with 2 additional classrooms across the road. The outside play area is limited to about 3m x 6m fenced off from the road, but the school often makes use of a nearby playground.

Vissershok Primary School: This is a permanent brick primary school catering to children in the local farming communities as well as the local farming communities as well as the local township and local settlements around the area. In addition to the normal classes for each grade, there is also a computer lab, a library, decent sized grass field and netball court for the kids to play on.

Little Angels Educare: A small school of roughly 25 children aged between 1 year and 7 years. The school is made up of a small room divided into two to seperate the different age groups. Often the school makes use of the nearby playground to provide the children with some much needed excersise. The school recently received a donation enabling them to perform upgrades to the class and make it more comfortable for everyone working in the school.

Good Hope Educare: Good Hope has approximately 50 children aged between 1 and 7 years. The main building is divided into 3 classrooms and a kitchen to prepare food for the children. The outdoor play area is limited but is closed off from the road. The school recently received a full facelift - sponsored largely by two volunteers.

Footsteps: Footsteps Educare has 80 students aged between 1 years and 7 years of age. The school building is made up of 2 prefabricated classrooms with 2 additional classrooms inside the main house.

The Western Cape, where the program is based, is a very culturally diverse area of South Africa. There is a large integration of the poor with the wealthy. The children in this program range from 0 to 14 years old and live in the townships in Cape Town such as Dunoon or Site 5. Most of them can speak English, yet their mother tongue may be Afrikaans or Xhosa. The homes they live in are often built from scrap metal and second-hand wood and usually do not have running water. Forty percent of the families in these areas lack a male head of household and the children often have no one to monitor their educational progress or after-school activities. Furthermore, alcohol and drug abuse is common in the townships where they live and especially at this age they are susceptible to recruitment by local gangs.

Day 1: Welcome to South Africa (Saturday)
You are collected from the airport and taken to your volunteer accommodation in Tableview where you can check in and get comfortable before your welcome orientation and dinner. You will also receive your arrival package which includes a little bag, t-shirt and welcome book.

Day 2: Orientation Tour of Cape Town (Sunday)
You will head in to Cape town with a member of staff who will take you on a walking tour of Cape Town together with the other new arrivals.

After the walking tour you can take a bus or walk to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Sit back and sip a cocktail, enjoy some fresh fish and watch the ships in the busy working harbour or walk around taking in the shops, markets and musicians on the sidewalks. Alternatively, you can take the cable car up Table Mountain and enjoy breathtaking views of the city, or visit the famous Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held in prison during the apartheid era (own expense).

In the evening head back on the local bus to Table View.

Volunteers work 5 days a week from Monday to Friday. Mondays are office based for both new and old volunteers. New volunteers receive their teacher training and additional information on our projects and the areas they will be working at. Old volunteers assist with planning for the week, equipment maintenance, re-organising storage spaces for equipment, donation sorting etc. Working hours at the school or educare center are between 08:00 and 14:00 or 09:00 and 12:00. Some days volunteers will work a full 8 hours and other days 4 to 5 hours depending on the needs of the project.

Volunteers will help in the daily running of the projects including:

Teaching lessons to children in the older groups (colours, letters, shapes, art, etc.) as well as teaching English through play and vocabulary stimulation
Stimulating smaller children in the younger groups with developmental toys, touch and by speaking English to them. We believe that speaking English with the children will assist them as they get older as English is compulsory in later education. The earlier they learn, the more they will benefit.
Educating children in social and emotional development
Assisting with the feeding programs
Supervising children at all times
Helping with events and fundraising
Administration, lesson plan preparation, preparing developmental activities, doing research, etc. This is mostly done after project hours in preparation for the upcoming days. You may be required to do some of these tasks in your free time.
Helping with the baby room - changing diapers, feeding babies, assisting with nap time
Helping with washing up after meals, cleaning classrooms, washing bedding and toys
Maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for the children at all times

This project runs all year round, however, during school holidays we run the project according to our holiday program which mainly takes place in the settlements/townships where they live. The program includes sports days, game days, outings to the beach or pools etc. During the holidays it's a time for the kids to have fun so the programs are less structured and may change depending on the number of children that arrive on the day. Working hours are generally from 08:00 to 14:00. Depending on the funds available you could also be involved in a construction or renovations program (building work, vegetable gardens, painting etc.).

In addition there are a lot of public holidays spread throughout the year. Please note that during the holidays, it's a time for the kids to have fun, so the programs are less structured and may change depending on the number of children that arrive on the day.

Due to Christmas and New Year’s celebrations between December 23th - Jan 1st, all projects in Cape Town are closed, however, volunteers may still use the accommodation and food and join us for Christmas lunch on the 25th.

With every new arrival we have a safety and orientation briefing where we discuss issues such as general safety in South Africa for example, what to do in the settlements, where not to go, what to do in case of an emergency, sea currents, HIV AIDS and crime. There is a volunteer co-ordinator with our volunteers at all times while on project to ensure the safety of the children and volunteer. We offer all our volunteers 24/7 support and assistance.

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Oversigt

Volunteers will stay in one of our volunteer houses with bedrooms sleeping 2 - 5 people. All houses are facilitated with electricity, hot water, a kitchen, one or two toilets, a bathroom with a shower, beds with linen (no towels). Male and female volunteers will share rooms unless otherwise requested. Upgrades to private single or double rooms are available at extra cost.

Volunteers are responsible for keeping their own room and volunteer house tidy. Bathrooms and kitchens are cleaned everyday by cleaning staff, and linen is changed once a week. The volunteer houses are at walking distance from shops, restaurants, entertainment, bus stops and the beach.

As you exit the terminal at the airport, our driver will be waiting for you with your name on a board. If for any reason you can’t find the driver please make your way to the Cape Town Information Desk and contact us at +27 21 556 9369 or +27 73 3334338. On project days the volunteers will be transported by private car or mini bus. The vehicles are roadworthy and have all relevant licenses and liability insurance.

Volunteers will receive 3 meals a day (Monday - Friday) and breakfast and lunch (Saturday - Sunday) which include:
Breakfast: self-catering breakfast of cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast & spreads
Lunch: self-catering lunch of breads, fruit, cold meats, cheese, salad & spreads
Dinner: consists of a hot meal such as a traditional South African BBQ (braai) and stews (potjies).
Tea and coffee will be available all day.

Exception: During your Cape Town introduction weekend, you will only receive a welcome dinner on the day of arrival, other meals are at our own expense.

Also note:
All dinners will include meat, starch and vegetables.
A generous amount of food will always be given so no one will go hungry.
All other drinks will be at own expense.
A refrigerator is available for volunteer’s personal food.

Please advise us on your dietary needs when filling out your application form. Participants with very specific dietary needs may be required to supplement their meals at their own expense.

Visas, Insurances & Flight Tickets
Visas and insurances are the responsibility of the intern. Travel insurance is compulsory. You are also required to present a copy of your return flight itinerary when entering South Africa.

Winter in South Africa
Please note that May through to September are our winter months and it can get quite chilly with an average temperature ranging from 5 degrees Celsius at night to 15 degrees Celsius during the day. So please make sure to pack enough warm clothes if you plan your trip in that period.
