Get involved in renovating local village schools and help the students have better learning conditions.

This project supports schools in and around Stone Town in Zanzibar by restoring and renovating their infrastructure in order to create better learning conditions for the students. We also help the schools by providing learning facilities where and when needed. The projects include renovating libraries, playgrounds, fixing school furniture and anything that might need a helping hand at the time!

Through participating in this social project, you will make a difference to the local community by supporting the students at these schools.

Your work may involve tasks where you will be able to help to create a positive learning environment in the school. The project involves hard physical and manual labour, as you will be laying bricks, doing carpentry, painting, laying tiles, and landscaping/gardening. We may also be involved in renovating buildings, painting, repairing furniture, fixing equipment and so on.

The other side of this project involves a more artistic and relaxed environment. You may also get a chance to use your creative ideas to beautify the school surroundings. You will work alongside a local coordinator and a foreman who provides guidance. This activity is fun supporting the initiative and creativity during the process.

Zanzibar - Construction and Renovation

About Your Location

Zanzibar is an amazing destination that tempts you to explore it from end to end. It is a semi-autonomous region within the United Republic of Tanzania and it is comprised of two main islands, Unguja and Pemba, and a number of sparsely populated islets. After the 1964 revolution, Zanzibar joined with the then Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Zanzibar maintains its own government and is directly responsible for all non-union affairs, including health services.

Unguja Island covers an area of about 1,464 square kilometers and Pemba Island covers an area of about 864 square kilometers. The local people are a mixture of ethnic backgrounds. Islam is the dominant religion and practiced by most of Zanzibaris, although there are also followers of Christianity and other ethnic beliefs. Swahili is a local language used by people and is spoken extensively in Zanzibar. English is also spoken by many people.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
