You will stay at the volunteer houses in the Banjar Nyuh village, located on the island and about 5 minutes from the harbour. Village life is quintessentially local and you will get a good chance to see typical Balinese life, where you will get the chance to interact with local people and practice your new-found language skills. You must be prepared for a more basic standard of living on the island, with fewer shops and attractions available (bearing in mind the beach is practically at your doorstep)!
We provide all basic facilities at the volunteer house which includes shared bathrooms with a cold water shower and western toilets. You can expect to share a room with one to seven other volunteers of the same gender. There is WiFi available at the volunteer accommodation, however, the connection is unreliable so we recommend purchasing a SIM card with data for an unlocked mobile before starting work at the project.
All participants are expected to be environmentally responsible and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and tidy.
For Turtle Conservation project participants who would like to sign up for the program without the Culture Week, we would like to recommend them to arrive in Bali before 13:00, so they can take the last ferry to Nusa Penida at 16:00 on Sunday. In this way, they will be able to attend the Orientation Day on Monday morning with all the other new arrivals.
In case a participant cannot make it before 13:00, they have to arrange a room near Sanur Harbour (Jl. Sanur Beach Street Walk, Sanur), where they will be met by our staff on Monday morning. Our staff will arrange the boat for them. In this case, they will miss the Orientation and Document collection meeting in the morning. So, they need to do the training in the afternoon.
The project is located on the island of Nusa Penida which is a 45-minute speedboat ride from mainland Bali.
We only receive participants on the Sunday before the program begins. The pick-up time from Denpasar Airport is between 06:00 and 20:00. After passing through customs, make sure you stay on the same floor and follow the way to the arrival gate (walking through the duty free shop). Our representative will be waiting for you at the International Arrival Flight Information Center. Please look for your name board. You may need to wait for several participants to arrive before the group leaves the airport.
If you're traveling to Denpasar Bali overland, we can arrange a pick-up at the following meeting points:
- Bintang Supermarket in Ubud at 14:00 on Sundays (Address: Jl. Raya Sanggingan No.45 Ubud, Bali 80515, Indonesia)
- Make your own way to Denpasar Airport at 14:00 on the Sunday before your program starts. Meeting point is at the international arrivals flight information center.
We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your stay in Indonesia for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with the staff/other participants/international calls. A SIM card is especially useful if you are traveling to the project on your own.
If you arrive much earlier than the pick-up window, you can choose to:
Request extra accommodation and pick-up from us at an additional cost
Accommodate yourself until you can meet your coordinator at a meeting point.
We strongly discourage arriving after your pick-up window, as it may take longer for you to settle into your program. But if unavoidable, you must either:
Make your own way to us
Request a special pick-up at an extra cost.
REMEMBER: In any case, let us know your plans. You must also inform us of any flight changes or emergencies as soon as possible.
Transfer Coordinator: +62 (0) 821 446 34202
Please be aware that you have to check out on the Saturday morning after the program. We do not offer airport drops on completion of the program due to the many different personal plans and return flight times and so participants need to make their own way to the airport. Our coordinator can help you with the different transportation options, but you will have to cover the cost.
Please make sure you are prepared to pay the country tax of 150,000 IDR when leaving Indonesia. This departure tax applies to everyone leaving the country.
Getting to the Project
It takes 5 mins to walk to the project from your accommodation.
A variety of vegetarian food and fruit is served in 'food boxes' due to safety and health reasons (3 meals a day on weekdays, breakfast on Saturdays, and breakfast and dinner on Sundays).
Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.
There are many ATM's in the center of Nusa Penida which is 20 minutes by car from the house. The ATM accepts ONLY Master Card. It does NOT accept Visa.
We have Wi-Fi at the volunteer house (however, the signal strength varies and is not very fast).
Local SIM Card
It is possible to buy these at the local shop. They cost about 20,000 IDR.
