Itinerary

Borneo - Orangutan Project

Aims & Objectives

The aims and objectives of this orangutan program is to spread awareness about these intelligent creatures, prevent them from going extinct, conserve their habitat, provide opportunity for students and participants to study the importance of orangutans in the food chain and in the ecosystem, provide help and support for the injured and rescued orangutans and not but the least to preserve these species for future generations.

Program Description

Your work as a participant at the center is divided into two areas; The Indoor Nursery and The Outdoor Nursery.

Each of the work areas is described below.
The Indoor Nursery
This area looks after the infants, from just a few months to around four years old. The babies stay in the sleeping area. Possible duties include:

- Transfer infant orangutans from the sleeping cages to the playing cages.
- Clean the sleeping area.
- Prepare food for the infants (peeling bananas, making formula milk).
- Feed the babies with bottled formula drink.
- Distribute bananas to infant orangutans.
- Give special attention and care for the sick infants.
- Transfer orangutans back to the sleeping cages.
- Clean the indoor nursery area.

NOTE: Participants may have the chance to work ‘hands-on’ with the orangutans, however, a strict policy of minimum human contact will be applied - this is to minimize the humanization of orangutans. Too much human contact will hamper the rehabilitation process of the orangutan.

The Outdoor Nursery
This area is home to the juveniles, generally aged between five and eight years old. These orangutans are fed at the nursery and on the tourist platform. Their food is taken to different platforms to ensure that they learn to search for their food. This ensures the orangutan does not become reliant on food being at a particular platform each day. Possible duties include:

- Collect bananas from the storeroom and take them via wheelbarrow to the nursery.
- Sweep leaves from surrounding paths and clean the nursery area.
- Feed the orangutans at the outdoor nursery.
- Assist the rangers by carrying bananas to the tourist platform (done twice daily)
- Complete the observation sheet on orangutans that attended the feeding platform.

NOTE: When working in this area there is plenty of time for observation of the orangutans in their natural surroundings.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Local transport

Arrival Information
If your flight arrives on Sunday between 08:00 and 18:00, we will pick you up from Sandakan Airport. Meet our transfer coordinator, who will meet you at the International/Domestic Arrival Hall, depending on your flight. He/she will carry a placard with Green Lion International Logo and arrange your transport to the hostel in Sepilok. Any other times outside of this window, no pickup included. Make your own way to us, or arrange a pickup at an additional cost.

Please note: If you arrive early, you need to arrange your own transportation from the airport to your chosen accommodation. Then, on the arrival day, we can pick you up at the accommodation by 14:00 and take you to the hostel in Sepilok.

What to do, if...
...you are outside the arrival hall but can’t find our Transfer Coordinator?
Go to the nearby seats, sit down, rest and try calling our Transfer Coordinator (phone number below). If they don’t answer on the first try, keep trying. If they still don’t answer after a few tries, call the emergency number (below).

...you can’t reach all of our emergency contact persons on the phone.
Please send them a text message and wait. They might be busy and will get back to you shortly. If for some reason they don’t get back to you, try again.

...you don’t get an answer on your messages
Stay at the seating area. We will meet you there in any case.

***DO NOT LEAVE THE MEETING POINT, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TRAVEL TO OUR CENTER ON YOUR OWN.***

Early/Late Arrivals
Arriving Early
If you arrive much earlier than the pickup window, you can choose to:
- Request extra accommodation and pickup from us at an additional cost OR: Accommodate yourself until you can meet your coordinator at a meeting point

Arriving Late
We strongly discourage arriving after your pickup window, as it may take longer for you to settle into your program. But if unavoidable, you must either:
- Make your own way to us OR: Request a special pickup at an extra cost.

Departure Information
Please be aware that drop off departures are not included in the program in order to provide flexibility for participant’s different plans and return flight times. Of course if you require assistance, your Local Coordinators will always be more than happy to assist you with your return transfer or onward travel plans. Last check-out time is 12:00

Mere information

Dress Code
Casual dress is appropriate however, no see-through clothes or low-cut tops are permitted.

What to Bring
Rehydration sachets
Poncho or waterproof coat - this is personal preference. If you are caught in a proper tropical downpour, nothing is really going to keep you dry!
Lightweight cotton clothing will dry very quickly anyway, and we always find that an extra layer simply makes you sweat more, so you end up wet regardless.

Visa
Please remember to take care of the visa arrangements on time.

Money & Shopping
Easy access to local shops, laundry and easily get a transport facility by using the app GRAB.

SIM Card
We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your whole time in Malaysia (for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with other participants, staff and family back home); and especially if travelling to us by yourself, this becomes more useful. You can buy a local SIM at the airport, most supermarkets and newsagents for a low cost on a prepaid plan. Getting the cheapest plan should be enough, and remember to get the package with data plan.
