The area at Carrara has been called "the world's oldest industrial area" as from the time of Roman-times marble has been collected from the area's. The marbles are located around Carrara on the west coast.
Visit one of the great marble quarries in the mountains behind Carrara. Continue into Carrara town and experience the processing of marble blocks for beautiful statues and ornaments. Then the tour continues to the great marble museum which shows the marble extraction since the Romans continues with photos, technical models and marble samples from all over the world etc.
It is possible to extend the visit to an art workshop nearby where you can see how sculptures are made. An impressive example of the marble's use can be seen at the local Duomo. Another proof of the quality of the material is that Michelangelo himself collected Marmara from Carrara.
